Clongowes Etruscan Border Set
Circa 1785. In the eighteenth-century, the re-discovery of ancient Roman mural paintings in excavations at Pompeii and elsewhere caused a sensation, inspiring a style known at the time as ‘Etruscan’. The Clongowes borders, which combine human, animal, hybrid and mythical motifs, are based on those in the Library at Clongowes Wood, County Kildare, created by Thomas Wogan Browne in the 1780s.
